Marinas Guardian has been on tour! Back in February we attended the fifth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC5) in Vancouver, Canada.
For those who aren’t familiar with IMPAC, it’s a conference for all things Marine Protection and MPAs which occurs once every three years in different countries round the world. The conference features a diverse range of keynote speakers, workshops and panel discussions on a wide variety of tropics related to marine protection and management. Delegates discussed the importance of developing effective conservation strategies that consider the unique cultural, economic and environmental contexts of each region.
There were many key themes running throughout the conference; indigenous knowledge and involvement, sustainable financing, the need for effective enforcement and the general shared love and appreciation for the marine environment. We look to take these areas and weave them into the very core of Marinas Guardian to ensure we bring complementary efforts into the space.
IMPAC5 provided a perfect opportunity for Marinas Guardian to connect with experts from around the world working on the latest innovations, strategies and best practices in marine conservation. As a result, it provided valuable insights into how Marinas Guardian can contribute these efforts, giving us the confidence that our expertise in facilitating collaboration will be a valuable addition to the current efforts in marine conservation. We can all bring something different in the drive to protect the ocean, ensuring long lasting collaboration is key to de-fragmenting the efforts within our sector.
As we reflect on our time at IMPAC, it is clear that the congress is a crucial ‘catch up’ for collaboration in the global effort to protect the Ocean. We look forward to continuing to work with our fellow delegates to advance marine protection. With renewed inspiration to get started we can’t wait for what we’ll have to share at IMPAC6 in Senegal!
